PSA and BGS grade the same card differently
PSA uses a single numeric grade (up to PSA 10). BGS grades four subcategories (centering, corners, edges, surface) and rolls them into an overall grade, plus the well-known 'Black Label' BGS 10 (a perfect score across all four subs). The same physical card can come back a PSA 9 and a BGS 9.5, or vice versa, because the two companies weigh those subcategories differently. That difference is not cosmetic. It changes what a buyer will actually pay.
Why the market prices them differently by category
For most modern cards, PSA 10 tends to carry the strongest resale premium and the deepest, most liquid market, simply because more buyers collect and compare PSA pop reports. BGS Black Label (a true 10 across all four subs) commands a premium for elite vintage and high-end modern cards precisely because it's rarer to earn than a PSA 10. A plain BGS 9.5 on the same card often sells for less than an equivalent PSA 9, despite the higher-looking number, because PSA has the larger buyer pool for most categories.
